Career stats player: Ned played for the Brewers from 1980 to 1983 as a 2nd catcher. He was traded to the Rangers for Jim Sunberg and played about half the games at catcher for the Rangers in 1984 splitting time with Donnie Scott. He then signed with the Expos and played his final 5 games with them. He had 128 career hits with 16 HR and a .212 career average.
All Time Stat: Was never hit by a pitch or intentionally walked in 219 games. He walked 21 times and struckout 117.
Career stats manager: 1203-1341. Yost was a fixture on the early ’90s Braves staff under Bobby Cox. He won the World Series in 1995 on that staff beating Mike Hargrove’s Indians. In 2002 he was hired by Milwaukee to replace Jerry Royster. They did not really flourish under Yost losing 94 games in back to back years. Then a .500 season, then back to 6 games under, back to two games over and then Ned was fired in 2008 after 150 games when the team was 83-67, the Brewers were still in the playoff race, but had lost eleven of their last fourteen games. They made the playoffs under new skipper Dale Sveum.
Ned then took his talents to Kansas City. They did not start off well, losing 253 of his first 451 games. Then they really took a turn for the better and won 86 games and then in 2014 they won 89 games and the AL Pennant and the next year they won the whole thing. Ned Yost, our first manager to win a title on this list. They year they won they were 95-67. Yost was 22-9 in the playoffs with KC. Then they had two 500 seasons and then two 100 loss seasons and Ned was put to bed.
Fun Fact: Yost briefly had a second career as a taxidermist in Jackson, Mississippi, in between his playing days and coaching days.* Also his name, Peak year: 1939, with 319 baby boys named Ned per census.
Ever a Future Star? Twice, sort of, the year prior to this card 1980 he had none but the year prior to that he was on a 1979 Brewers Prospects card with Eddie Romero and Kevin Bass. That year Topps chose to do the Prospect cards photos in black and white.
Rookie or final card? No. He would get a BUNTING card in 1983. And manager cards in 2004-2008.
Hall of Fame? Number retired? Kansas City Royals Hall of Fame
