First Impression; Dave Lopes reminded me of Cheech and I heard his name a lot as a kid so he was always one of my favorites.
Career stats player: He was the quintessential Dodger. His rookie season was 1973 and he played 1200 games through 1981. Lopes spent nine seasons with the Dodgers as their regular second baseman. Along with the rest of the starting infield, Steve Garvey (1B), Bill Russell (SS), and Ron Cey (3B), which stayed together for eight and a half seasons. He was a scrapper, could get on based and then steal. He won a Gold Glove and he was a World Champion in 1981. He made the All-Star game 4 times. His career 557 stolen bases ranks him 26th in All-Time list as of 2026.
All Time Stat: Is still second behind Maury Wills in stolen bases for the Dodgers, 490 to 418. He was nearly a 30-30 club member as he hit 28 home runs in 1978 and stolen 42 bases.
Career stats manager: 144-195. He started managing the Brewers in 2000 and lasted just over 2 seasons. He almost lost 90 games twice and he was well on his way to a 3rd with a 3-12 record in 2002 when he was fired.
Fun Fact: The “fall” of some of these players is pretty stark. This guy was a stalwart for many years. And he was traded for someone named Lance Hudson. Hudson never reached the majors. He never got above AA.
