Dave Cash #334

San Diego Padres

Date of birth: June 11, 1948 Utica, NY

High School: Thomas R. Proctor High School Utica, NY

Nickname: Action Dog. Yeah, action dog. They can’t all be good.

First Impression; Chillin in the dugout. He’s got his batting glove and flip down shades on, but up.  The flip up would be on a Tony Gwynn card in a later set.

Career stats: 3 time All Star and 1971 World Series champ.  1980 was it for Dave, this dog had his last hunt, but he played the bulk of the games, 130, but only hitting .227 with one homer.  He had hit .321 in 1979 but in limited action.  Overall he played in 1422 games and hit a very good .283.

All Time Stat: Led the majors in at bats 1974-1976 as well as hits in 1975 with 213 and triples in 1976 with 12.

Fun Fact: Cash was part of what is believed to be the first all-black starting lineup (including several Latinos) in Major League history. On September 1, 1971, the Pirates’ starting lineup was: Rennie Stennett, 2B; Gene Clines, CF; Roberto Clemente, RF; Willie Stargell, LF; Manny Sanguillén, C; Dave Cash, 3B; Al Oliver, 1B; Jackie Hernández, SS; and Dock Ellis, P.

Ever a Future Star? He was a “Rookie Star” in 1970

Rookie or final card? Final card.  Unfortunately, his cards were not much to look at over the years.  He had 12 cards, and his only on the field shot was 1979 in what could only be described as a probable check swing.

Hall of Fame? Number retired? N/A
