Cecil Cooper #555

Milwaukee Brewers

Date of birth: December 201949 Brenham, TX

High School:  Brenham HS (Brenham, TX)

College:  Prairie View A&M University (Prairie View, TX)

First Impression; Its a great card, he’s getting ready for a pitch, they’re playing the Cubs.

Career stats player: He was a Brewer through and through, though he was first with the Red Sox. In 1976 he was traded by the Boston Red Sox to the Milwaukee Brewers for Bernie Carbo and George Scott. He was his era’s Ryan Braun, but his power prowess was not as good as Braun’s Cooper hit 201 homers and Braun hit 352. But Cooper was a 5 time All-Star, two time Gold Glove and three time Silver Slugger at first base.3x Silver Slugger

All Time Stat: He is third all time for the Brewers in career average .302 behind Paul Molitor .303 and Jeff Cirillo .307.

Career stats manager: 171-170. On August 27, 2007, he was named the interim manager of the Astros following the firing of Phil Garner, making him the first African American field manager in Astros’ history. The Astros played well under him but never great and they never made a lot of noise with him as manager. Coming off the 2005 World Series loss and run, the team had a lot of expectations but the reality was the team just didnt have the horses.

Fun Fact: “Out of necessity,” Cooper began working for his agent. Cooper eventually took on his own clients including Randy JohnsonWade Boggs and Joe Girardi.*

Ever a Future Star?  1972 Rookie Stars with Carlton Fisk. Pretty good card.

Rookie or final card? No.

Hall of Fame? Number retired? Milwaukee Brewers Walk of Honor
