Boston Red Sox.
Date of birth: August 17, 1951 Tuscaloosa, AL
High School: Bessemer HS (Bessemer, AL)
College: University of Alabama
Nickname: Butch. Given name Clell Lavern Hobson Jr. Per my coPilot; Clell is a rare, masculine name with roots in Gaelic, Scottish, and English traditions, and it has been used primarily as a surname before appearing as a given name.
First Impression; This was the stuff. I dont know why when the guys were in the cage that they didn’t do tight shots of guys in the field like this. Having said that, it almost appears to be an unlicensed card because you cannot ID the team other than his hat.
Career stats player: Butch played in two September games in 1975, that year the Reds beat the Red Sox (Fisk series). They eased him into the lineup in ’76 and then they gave him a three year audition. And he slugged… 68, 45, 61. Those were his extra base totals from 1977-1979. His career average was .248.
All Time Stat: In 1977 he posted 43 errors, the most for any American League player in that season, and his .899 fielding average also was the first below .900 by a regular player in 60 years.*
Career stats manager: 207-232. Hoffman took for Joe Morgan, but not the Joe Morgan from this set. He was 73-89 his first season and the Sox finished 7th. The next year an improvement of 7 games, but a 5th place finish. And then he like Hal McRae and Johnny Oates, was not retained the year after the strike.
Fun Fact: After the 1980 season he was traded by the Boston Red Sox with Rick Burleson to the California Angels for Mark Clear, Carney Lansford and Rick Miller. Hobson would play 85 games for the Angels hitting .235. While Burleson would play 253 games for California hitting .281. Mark Clear would go 35-23 over 5 seasons for Boston out of the pen, no starts (he only had 1 start in 481 appearances for his career). Carney Lansford hit .317 for Boston in 230 games and Rick Miller would hit .265 for Boston over 12 seasons and 1101 games. The Red Sox win this one hands down.
Ever a Future Star? No
