Bake McBride #352

Philadelphia Phillies

Date of birth: February 3, 1949 Fulton, MO

High School: Fulton High School

College: Westminster College in Missouri

Location: At bat, mid warm up swing.

Nickname: Shake n’ Bake or Callaway Kid, the Callaway kid was a reference to a local area where he grew up.

First Impression; I remember the card but mostly due to the glare and that it wasnt a very interesting photo. I do now note that it possible that his hat is in his back pocket?

Career stats: Bake, is he a chef or sumthin?  Honestly not even Arnold knows, that’s his real name.  According to an article in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch · Mar 11, 1973, he did not clearly know the origin of the nickname. He won NL Rookie of the Year in 1974 with the St. Louis Cardinals.  Was a 1976 All-Star and World Champion in 1980 with the Phillies. Knee and leg issues likely due to playing on turf reduced his speed over time which directly affected his value (since speed was a big part of his game).  His career average was .299 over 1071 games.

All time stat: McBride began the 1982 season as the starting right fielder for the Indians, but he suffered an eye infection and did not play after May 21.[34] He had started the season hitting .365 in 27 games.[8] McBride said that the eye infection was related to his contact lenses

Fun fact: He didnt just win the Rookie of the Year, he coasted, besting Greg Gross (7) and Bill Madlock (1) by racking up 16 first place votes.

Ever a Future Star?  He was a “Rookie Outfielder” in a 1974 4 panel card.

Rookie or final card? No

Hall of Fame? Number retired? N/A
