New York Yankees
Date of birth: December 28, 1947 Cananea, Mexico
Date of death: September 23, 2000 (52)
High School: Rodriguez began playing professional baseball in Mexico at age 16.
Nickname: Chi Chi. I have no other exposure to this nickname other than Chi Chi Rodriguez and the old Mexican Restaurant. I would assume since his last name was also Rodriguez they called him that in relation to the golfer. I would probably be a good AI because I was certain the answer I was going to get was some mish mash falsehood. What I got is certainly plausible. It said, “The nickname “Chi Chi” is a diminutive form of “Aurelio,” and in Rodríguez’s case, it was adopted from a fellow athlete whose reputation for dedication and work ethic inspired him, Chi Chi Flores.”
Location: BUNTING
First Impression; He’s bunting and not how I was taught. If there were no fans in the stands I would think it might be batting practice.
Career stats: In 1980 he played for San Diego and the Yankees. He had 183 plate appearances with San Diego hitting .200 with 2 homers and had 182 plate appearances with the Yankees hitting .220 with 3 homers. He was ‘purchased’ by the New York Yankees from the San Diego Padres on August 4, 1980.
All time stat: His career range factor of 3.215 per nine innings at third base ranks second in major league history, trailing only Darrell Evans. And his career tally 4,150 assists at third base ranked fifth in major league history at the time of his retirement.*
Fun fact: His gold glove in 1976 was the first won by an American League Third Baseman not named Brooks Robinson since 1959.
